In a sad demonstration of cosmic irony, a North Carolina teenager who studied teen highway deaths as a high school project is dead after a car crash. Shannon Nicole Adkins, 18, graduated last spring. Her senior project was a report about the risks young drivers face on rural roads.
Adkins was driving a pickup truck when another pickup crossed the center line and struck Adkins head-on. The other driver, a 29-year-old woman, was hospitalized in fair condition and charged with driving while impaired. Adkins was the 27th Johnston County, NC teen to die in a car wreck since 2006 and the second in a week.
