Teacher Dies on Last Day of School

Author: Taz | Files under Casualties: Low

TeacherElementary school teacher Sharon Smith waved goodbye and blew kisses to the students she loved dearly.  The fourth-grade teacher, age 57, was retiring after 36 years.

But just moments after her class dismissed, Smith complained of short breath.  The staff called an ambulance.  Sadly, a few moments later, Mrs. Smith died on the way to the hospital.

Principal Alice Woodward said Smith’s students had just left class.  “The children had not been gone very long — two or three minutes, maybe five,” she said.  Woodward said Smith was a fine teacher who loved technology and was very dependable.  “Any child who had her would tell you Sharon was their favorite teacher,” she said.  “She had a caring attitude and saw something good in every child and every teacher.”
