Suicide Decapitation by Sports Car

Author: Taz | Files under Casualties: Low, Suicide, Traffic Accidents

Aston Martin A U.K. businessman is surely to win the "Creative Suicide" contest.  Gerald Mellin, 54, decapitated himself in his sports car to get back at his younger wife for leaving him.

Mellin tied one end of a rope to a tree, got into his Aston Martin, and wrapped the other end of the rope around his neck.  He then drove the $150,000 sports car into a busy road, giving other drivers a front-seat view of his horrific death as his head popped off and rolled into traffic.

The day before Mellin’s suicide, a court awarded an extra £100 per week in alimony to his estranged wife, Mirielle, 33.  In response, Mr. Mellin sent Mirrielle a text message that said "Congratulations XXX" and asked to meet.

"We met in a pub after a court hearing and he started having a tantrum," Mrs. Mellin said.  "As we made our way back to our cars he opened the boot and said, ‘There’s my rope, that’s what I’m going to kill myself with.’  I told him to grow up and give me the rope.  But he just laughed."  Nobody’s laughing now.

Cyclists

A drunk driver plowed his car into a bicycle race on a highway near the U.S.-Mexico border, killing one cyclist and injuring ten others.  An amazing photograph taken by a city official shows the moment of impact.  The collision launched riders and bikes high into the air.  Witnesses described children crying, women shouting for help, and men trying to beat the driver before police arrived to arrest him.  The 21-mile race was canceled after the crash.

Tank vs. Cops

Tank vs. Cops

In 1995, a U.S. Army veteran and unemployed plumber under the influence of methamphetamine stole an M60 Patton tank from a U.S. National Guard Armory in San Diego, California and went on a rampage, destroying cars and a large RV before being shot to death by police. The week before his rampage, Shawn Nelson told a friend he was thinking of committing suicide.

At one point during the chase, the tank rolled over a fire hydrant and created a geyser. After 23 minutes on the loose, the tank stalled when it hit the concrete center divider on a freeway and got hung up. Officers scrambled on top of the tank, opened the hatch and fired their weapons. The shooting drew criticism as to why the police didn’t use tear gas to subdue the suspect. Police said that Nelson was “driving a 58-ton vehicle, aiming it at occupied cars and trucks and creating a serious threat to public safety.” The district attorney’s office ruled in 1995 that the shooting was justified.

Jerry Seinfeld Flips Car

Author: Taz | Files under Celebrities, Traffic Accidents

Jerry SeinfeldJerry Seinfeld flipped his vintage Fiat sports car after the brakes failed, but he walked away without serious injury.  The billionaire comedian was driving alone in the exclusive Hamptons region of Long Island, New York, when he realized the brakes were not working.  He pulled the steering wheel hard right to avoid hitting other traffic, and the car rolled over, first on the passenger side, then the roof, and finally coming to rest on the driver’s side.  The police report blamed mechanical failure and said Seinfeld had not been drinking.

Always the funny man, Seinfeld said after the accident: "Because I know there are kids out there, I want to make sure they all know that driving without braking is not something I recommend, unless you have professional clown training or a comedy background, as I do.  It is not something I plan to make a habit of."

Wrong-Way Truck Crash

A Canadian truck driver suffering from diabetic shock drove at high speed into oncoming traffic on an Edmonton highway for 20 minutes. The fiery finale was caught on home video, showing the truck as it hits a concrete guard rail on an exit ramp, goes airborne, and plunges 100 feet below onto railroad tracks, where the truck explodes in a huge fireball. The driver, 25-year-old Mark Santos, was killed, but fortunately nobody else was seriously injured.
