Author: Taz | Files under Casualties: Low, Crime

MachetePirates armed with machetes hacked a U.S. tourist to death and seriously wounded his wife in an attack aboard the couple’s sailboat in Guatemala.  Nancy Dryden, 67, said her husband, Daniel Perry Dryden, 66, was killed by four men who boarded their boat while it was anchored in Lake Izabal.

"They poked us and stabbed us with the machetes, and they were asking for money, specifically dollars," said Dryden, who in a Guatemalan hospital in stable condition.  The couple complied with the demands, but the robbers were apparently unhappy with their booty. "We had a few quetzales (Guatemala’s currency), but we had no dollars with us on the boat," Dryden said.

Dryden said the four men swam from shore to reach their boat.  After murdering her husband, the men demanded Nancy hand over the boat keys.  When she refused, the men surprisingly left and swam back to shore.  Nancy struggled over to the boat’s radio and sent out a distress call.  "I said we need help … my husband was not moving."

Office Worker Freakout

Author: Taz | Files under Crime, Damage: Low, Rampage, Work Accidents

Bad day at the office? Probably not as bad as this man’s poor co-workers, who faced his destructive rampage. A 3-minute video of the incident is naturally making its rounds on YouTube and the Web. The video is set to Verve’s song “Bittersweet Symphony” and shows the man throwing computer monitors and whiteboards, tearing down cubicle walls, and taking a sledgehammer to the office copier.

Many have speculated the video is a fake, citing co-workers who stick around instead of fleeing the scene. There is also a video from a second angle, which seems a bit convenient. Taken from a cell phone, this video includes sound and shows a security guard using a Taser to subdue the worker. We do not hear “Don’t tase me, bro!” as the language appears to be Russian.

Tank vs. Cops

Tank vs. Cops

In 1995, a U.S. Army veteran and unemployed plumber under the influence of methamphetamine stole an M60 Patton tank from a U.S. National Guard Armory in San Diego, California and went on a rampage, destroying cars and a large RV before being shot to death by police. The week before his rampage, Shawn Nelson told a friend he was thinking of committing suicide.

At one point during the chase, the tank rolled over a fire hydrant and created a geyser. After 23 minutes on the loose, the tank stalled when it hit the concrete center divider on a freeway and got hung up. Officers scrambled on top of the tank, opened the hatch and fired their weapons. The shooting drew criticism as to why the police didn’t use tear gas to subdue the suspect. Police said that Nelson was “driving a 58-ton vehicle, aiming it at occupied cars and trucks and creating a serious threat to public safety.” The district attorney’s office ruled in 1995 that the shooting was justified.

Author: Taz | Files under Casualties: Low, Crime, Fights, Video

A Florida teen was beaten in an “animalistic attack” filmed for YouTube. Victoria Lindsay, 16, of Mulberry, Fla., is still having trouble with her hearing and vision since the March 30 attack. She will be taught at home until she finishes high school and will miss the upcoming prom. Her parents say Lindsay is still scared for her life.

Seven juveniles and one adult are in police custody and charged with felonious battery, false imprisonment and kidnapping. One of the girls struck Lindsay on her head several times and then slammed Lindsay’s head into a wall, knocking her unconscious, according to the arrest report. Later the teens can be seen blocking the door and hitting Lindsay repeatedly. Two males allegedly acted as lookouts, police said.

Update:  Prosecutors are charging all seven juveniles as adults, and charging three of them with witness tampering.
