Hawk Attack

The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry is intense, but this is going too far.  Once again, "A-Rod" got an unfriendly welcome at Fenway Park.  But this time it was 13-year-old Alexa Rodriguez, and not the Yankees All-Star third baseman Alex Rodriguez.

Alexa was touring Fenway Park on a school trip Thursday when she was attacked by a red-tailed hawk living in the upper deck behind home plate.  The hawk drew a little blood from her scalp, but Alexa was not seriously injured.  The hawk, perched on a railing while the students toured the stadium, swooped with its talons extended right at the girl, scratching her scalp.  Wildlife officials removed the hawk’s nest and egg.

Jerry Seinfeld Flips Car

Author: Taz | Files under Celebrities, Traffic Accidents

Jerry SeinfeldJerry Seinfeld flipped his vintage Fiat sports car after the brakes failed, but he walked away without serious injury.  The billionaire comedian was driving alone in the exclusive Hamptons region of Long Island, New York, when he realized the brakes were not working.  He pulled the steering wheel hard right to avoid hitting other traffic, and the car rolled over, first on the passenger side, then the roof, and finally coming to rest on the driver’s side.  The police report blamed mechanical failure and said Seinfeld had not been drinking.

Always the funny man, Seinfeld said after the accident: "Because I know there are kids out there, I want to make sure they all know that driving without braking is not something I recommend, unless you have professional clown training or a comedy background, as I do.  It is not something I plan to make a habit of."

This TV news reporter thought it would be a good idea to cover a downhill toboggan race from the bottom of the hill.  Watch the video and see what happens.

One thing you can say is this reporter is a true professional.  As he’s laying on the ground right after the accident, he raises his head and says, "That was a bad idea.  At Riverside Park, Rob Leth, Global News."

And then as the producer is helping Rob to his feet, the producer says, "Are you OK?"  To which Rob responds, "Did you get that?"

7 Deadly Dinosaurs

Author: Taz | Files under Animals

T-Rex

Dinosaurs were the dominant animals on Earth for over 160 million years. Fortunately for humans, the dinosaurs’ reign ended about 65 million years ago in a mass extinction event believed to have been caused by a large asteroid striking the Earth.

Of all the dinosaurs to roam the Earth, the Tyrannosaurus Rex was one of the most deadly. The T-Rex was 40 feet long and stood 20 feet tall, weighed 16,000 pounds, and had bone-crushing jaws that could splinter prey like toothpicks.

Stealth Fighters Retiring

Author: Taz | Files under Aircraft, Casualties: High, Damage: High, War

F-117 Stealth The world’s first stealth fighter, the F-117, is retiring after 27 years of service in the U.S. Air Force. The fighter is retiring to free up money to modernize the fleet with the F-22 Raptor, also a stealth fighter. Fifty-nine F-117s were made; seven have crashed, one in Serbia in 1999.

The F-117 stealth technology was developed in the 1970s to fly into heavily-defended areas undetected and drop its payload with surgical precision. Although not invisible to radar, the F-117’s shape and reflective coating greatly reduced its detection.

An F-117 pilot said, “We knew stealth worked and it would take a lucky shot to hit us, but we knew a lucky shot could hit us at any time.” Incredibly, a stealth fighter has never been shot down.

Teacher Survives Lion Attack

Lion Attack

British teach Kate Drew, working as a volunteer teacher in Tanzania, was spending a few weeks traveling across Africa on a bus with other backpackers. As part of the trip, they visited a game reserve where lions are bred to be released back into the wild. Tourists can pay £24 to walk with several of the big cats, which are considered tame enough for contact with humans.

Suddenly a lion pounced on Drew from behind and pulled her to the ground, sinking its teeth into the back of her neck. As wardens rushed to help, the 400-pound lion kept Drew firmly in its grip, its jaws just missing her brain stem. Seconds later, Drew was rescued, dripping with blood. The bite wounds left her needing 13 stitches.

Recalling the attack, Drew said she assumed she was a “goner” after the lion pounced. As it held her on the ground, she was even more terrified to see two more lions running her way. Wardens believe the lion only intended to “play” with her after being attracted by her mane-like long blonde hair.

In spite of all our differences, the one thing that binds all living creatures is that we each have an expiration date. This guaranteed finality to our existence is what makes life special, something to be cherished and protected.

Because we value life, we are mindful and fearful of the thing that ends it: death. Many people have faith that something will come after life, be it heaven or hell, or even possibly another chance through reincarnation. Still others believe we simply decompose into atoms that disperse as another form of energy, perhaps dirt that may someday grow a tree, or smoke drifting out a crematorium.

Simply put, humans are fascinated by death and disaster. We are all natural-born rubberneckers, and there is plenty to watch. Because no matter how hard we try to bubble-wrap life, occasionally things can go terribly wrong.

Lookout-Below.com examines the accidents, disasters, destruction and death that affect our human existence. We promise to approach the subject in a tasteful and respectful manner. May god bless each of the souls of the people and animals who have suffered or died in the events described on this website.
