A teenage girl is accused of killing her adoptive mother by hitting her at least 15 times with a claw hammer. She has been charged with murder and will be tried as an adult.
Heather D’Aoust, now 15, allegedly left incriminating evidence on her cell phone and computer about her intent to kill her mother, Rebecca D’Aoust, 56. This included her scary plan of attack: “Wake up. Kill with hammer as they wake up. Hide bodies in back seat of van. Drive to church. Leave them with Christian-hating note, steal money. Bike home. Go to sleep again.”
There were also plans for the day after the murder: “Report to authorities, act panicked and explain I waited a day to see if they returned.”
The body of the victim was found by her husband, James D’Aoust, who heard a muffled scream and went downstairs to investigate. James was injured when Heather also attacked him with the hammer. The mother, a school teacher and counselor, died the next day at a hospital.
James D’Aoust testified his adoptive daughter was troubled for more than a year. She made suicidal threats and was kicked out of her Christian School. “I believe there are two Heathers,” D’Aoust said. There was the “Peaceful Heather” who was detailed and aware. But there was also a “Heather Two” who was disconnected, angry and highly sexual, he said.
